The original veteran, Private Caleb Phillips, served honorably in Company A of the 7th West Virginia Cavalry Volunteers. Initially recruited in 1861 as the 8th West Virginia Infantry, this regiment was mounted as cavalry in 1863 to counter Confederate forces in the Appalachian mountains. The 7th Cavalry fought across West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, participating in legendary cavalry operations including Averell's historic raids against vital Confederate supply lines.

Up for sale is a 100% original, antique 1866 Class I West Virginia Union Veteran Medal struck by master engraver A. Demarest in New York. This historic piece features the highly desirable, matching top pinback suspension brooch explicitly stamped "HONORABLY DISCHARGED" over the interlocking "WV" state monogram.
Design & Condition Details:
Obverse (Front): Exceptionally detailed high-relief scene depicting Liberty crowning a Union soldier with a laurel wreath.
Reverse (Back):
Features the crisp central inscription "Presented by the State of West Virginia" wrapped in an open laurel wreath. The original Demarest maker's mark is clearly legible at the base.
Condition: Exceptional condition with an authentic, completely uncleaned aged-bronze chocolate patina. While the original silk ribbon drape has worn away over the last 160 years, the bronze planchet is safely held by its original factory suspension.
