Vintage Halloween Paper Mache Pulp Choir Boy Jack O Lantern Pumpkin 1940s 1950s.
Original vintage molded paper pulp Halloween jack-o'-lantern in the collectible “Choir Boy” / open-mouth style, believed to date from approximately the 1940s–1950s.
This is a wonderful survivor from the era when these lightweight pulp pumpkins were actually used as Halloween decorations and jack-o'-lanterns. It has been in my family for at least 60 years and has been stored away for most of that time.
Approximate measurements:
7" tall
8" wide
6.5" deep
The pumpkin retains its wonderful original aged orange and dark green coloring, with the wear, fading and surface character you would expect from an original paper-pulp Halloween decoration of this age.
This one was actually used as a jack-o'-lantern many decades ago. The interior has visible soot/carbon deposits and evidence of old candle use. No candle has been burned inside it during the approximately 60 years it has been in my family's possession.
Condition:
There is age-related wear throughout, including paint loss, scuffs and discoloration. There is a damaged/worn area along the upper right edge of the top opening, which is clearly shown in the photographs. Please examine all photos carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description.
The original wire carrying handle is missing, although the old attachment impressions are still visible. There is also no paper face insert/backing present. There are no visible maker's marks on the bottom.
Despite its age and fragile paper construction, it has survived remarkably well and displays beautifully. Nothing has been restored or repainted.
You will receive the exact pumpkin shown in the photographs.
Because this is an old and very lightweight molded-paper piece, it will be packed especially carefully with generous cushioning to protect it from crushing during shipment.
