Master sosaku kokeshi,Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The 1950s.
A very interesting piece from the dawn of the Sosaku Kokeshi Movement by Yoshio Agasawara.The doll is decorated with elaborate chatterwork.
Yoshio Agasawara is mostly known as a prominent traditionalkokeshi craftsman belonging to the Togatta school. He apprenticed under Eiji Asakura, a prewar-trained Togatta woodworker and kokeshi maker.Yoshio's apprenticeship started in 1960; this peace, however, was made during the earlier stage of his kokeshi making career when he made modern kokeshi dolls. Therefore, this doll most likely dates back to 1950s and is quite interesting as an example of early experimentation by various young craftsmen in the new art form.
After dedicating himself to traditional kokeshi making, Agasawara-san often incorporated the chattering elements that are central to this piece in his Togatta kokeshi.
This kokeshi is a beautiful, very authentic sosaku work and a very interestingcollectible item.
