Sansaku Sekiguchi 関口 三作
Sansaku Sekiguchi was born in1925 in Shibukawa City, Gunma. He originally trained as a Japanese painter(1951–1957), but transitioned fully to creative kokeshi in 1958. He is one ofthe few artisans officially certified by the Japanese government as a“Masterof Creative Kokeshi.”
His techniques are intricate and versatile. His exclusive pieces often show precision carving, textile-inspireddesigns, and layered kimono motifs. His use ofchatter techniquesandstylized floral motifs — cherry blossoms, peonies, mountain camellia — adddepth and texture to his pieces.
Sekiguchi-san’s dolls oftenincorporated authentic costume elements and symbolic headdresses, such asbamboo fisherman’s hats and Buddhist kasa.
Sekiguchi-san’s artistic workis commemorated in the Sansaku Sekiguchi Museum in Gunma.
Sekiguchi-san held numeroussolo exhibitions and served as a longtime judge for the National Modern KokeshiCompetition. As an advisor to the Japan Kokeshi Crafts Association, he helpedshape the future of the art form.
