The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is a state-owned enterprise that is part of the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company (NAEK) Energoatom of the Ministry of Fuel and Energy of Ukraine.
The Chernobyl nuclear power plant was designed in the 60s, its construction began in 1970. It was planned to build 6 power units with high-power channel uranium-graphite reactors (RBMK), each unit with an electrical power of 1000 MW. The first two power units of Chernobyl NPP belong (in terms of the design and design solutions) to the first generation units (with minor improvements compared to the first two power units of the Leningrad NPP, the head ones in the RBMK series). The third and fourth units belong to the second generation units with more developed safety systems. In 1977, power unit No. 1 was put into operation, in 1978, unit No. 2, in 1981, unit No. 3, in 1983, unit No. 4. The construction of third generation power units No. 5 and No. 6 was completed.
The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986 at 1 hour 23 minutes during a planned shutdown of unit No. 4. According to the international scale of rating events at nuclear power plants, it qualifies as an accident of the seventh highest level.
