The Coelocanth are an ancient group of low-finned fish. Once thought extinct, these fish are \'living fossils\' because a living species latimeria chalumnae was discovered living off the East Coast of South Africa in 1938, having once been thought to have gone extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period 66 million years ago.Its disappearance from the fossil record 66 million years ago only to reappear as a living species relatively recently makes you wonder what other creatures once thought to have been destroyed by the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs survived much longer than previously thought, or may even still exist somewhere in the world?
