GEORGE WASHINGTON was very interested in opening the west to trade and navigation. He wanted to link the Potomac River through a series of canals and roads to the Ohio River. Washington led the way in chartering the Potomac Company. Washington died in 1799, 11 years before this lottery ticket was issued.
The Potomack Company was chartered in 1784 to improve the navigation of the Potomac River. Washington served as the company’s president. The lottery was authorized in 1810 to raise $300,000 to improve the company and its branch navigation system. The company played a crucial role in the development and economic growth of the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries. The company created a reliable system for transporting goods and passengers between western Virginia and the bustling port of Georgetown, Maryland. The company facilitated trade and commerce, connecting the vast agricultural regions of the Shenandoah Valley to thriving markets on the East Coast. The initiative spurred industrialization and facilitated the movement of raw materials, which contributed greatly to the expansion of the nation’s agricultural and industrial sectors.
