Here are three beautiful pairs of UNUSED, original Volkspolizei and Grenztruppen collar tabs of the early style. These were used by the Junior Enlisted ranks on their tunics. Introduced in the 1950's, each pair has a twisted cord around the edge of the tabs which show the branch color. In 1967, due to "economy measures", the cord was omitted and no longer appeared on the later versions of these.
From top to bottom we have the Volkspolizei Bereitschaften, or Riot Police; also known as the Barracks Police. Their job was to put down riots and other demonstrations.The blue ones in the middle were used by the Transport Police. They patrolled the train yards, bus terminals and everywhere else involving modes of transportation.Lastly, we have the standard Volkspolizei, the regular police as seen in cities, towns and villages. These same tabs were also used by the Grenztruppen, or the infamous Border Guards.
The markings and inspector numbers on the backs may vary from the example shown above.
