This incomplete collection contains 38 of the original 50 loose plates, each approximately 9 × 12 inches, reproducing celebrated John James Audubon bird paintings in color. The plates include a broad assortment of American birds, with subjects visible in the collection including Snowy Owl, Cardinal, Bald Eagle, Flamingo, Roseate Spoonbill, swans, egrets, pelican, hawks, owls, songbirds, waterfowl and numerous others. Each selection is accompanied on the reverse by ornithological commentary from Roger Tory Peterson, one of the most influential American ornithologists and bird-identification authors of the twentieth century.
The original Macmillan portfolio is retained and bears the decorative AUDUBON / BIRDS OF AMERICA cover design.
