1929 Central High School - Centralite - Detroit, Michigan Central High School in Detroit traces its origins to 1858, making it one of the city’s oldest public high schools. The school was originally located in downtown Detroit and later occupied the prominent building at Cass and Warren avenues, now known as Old Main on the Wayne State University campus. As Detroit’s population expanded, Central High School moved in 1926 to a new building at 2425 Tuxedo Street. By 1929, Central High School was well established at its Tuxedo Street location, serving students during a period of rapid population growth and industrial expansion in Detroit. The school offered academics, athletics, clubs, and other student activities typical of a major urban high school. A 1929 Central High School yearbook provides a period record of students, faculty, organizations, and school life in Detroit just before the onset of the Great Depression.
