Rare Find - Very Good Condition

This African carved “war” helmet mask was worn to prepare men for war as it physically empowered them and offered magical protection by instilling fear and terror in to the enemies of the tribe. This mask was also used when peace was restored after armed conflicts, to celebrate a victorious war. Other ceremonies included preparing the men for the hunt, cleansing the village of demon forces, funerals and important trials. Nowadays, it is worn for entertainment dances as well.

The mask is quite old and likely dates to the mid 20thcentury. It has large bulbous eyes, with pierced slits, a large nose and lips, and cylindrical protuberances from the cheeks to protect the face. It was hand carved in dark wood. It is 12 inches tall, 9 inches wide and 7 inches deep. It comes from Cameroon, and likely belongs to a tribe like the Bamum.

Origin: Private Collection in Washington DC.

Condition: Excellent.
