Offered here is an authentic antique Russian Orthodox icon dating to the18th century, painted in egg tempera on a hand-carved wooden panel with traditional gesso ground. The icon measures approximately7 x 6 inchesand retains its original wood board.
Subject & Iconography
The central figure depicts theMother of God (Theotokos)standing in intercession, surrounded by groups of faithful and saints who turn toward her in prayer. Above her is a small image ofChrist Emmanuelin a mandorla. This composition relates to Russian icons of theMother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” (Всех скорбящих Радость)or a closely related intercessory type popular in the 18th century.
The surrounding figures represent supplicants seeking aid and healing, a theme strongly associated with Russian devotional icons of this period.
Inscriptions
There are faint Church Slavonic inscriptions across the upper field and borders, consistent with Russian icon painting of the 1700s. Due to age and wear, they are partially obscured, but visible lettering corresponds to typical labels identifying the Mother of God and the intercessory theme. The icon shows the expected hand-painted titling and ornamental border text seen on provincial Russian icons.
