An authentic late Civil War to early Reconstruction-period Victorian carte de visite (CDV) featuring a three-quarter length seated studio portrait of an unidentified woman. She is beautifully captured in mid-1860s transition style, wearing her hair smoothly parted down the center and drawn flat over her temples into full rounded pads completely covering her ears. She is dressed in a dark heavy daytime dress bodice highlighted by a high neckline, a flat white structured rounded collar, and a small circular decorative brooch pin at her throat. She is captured in a natural pose sitting back comfortably while resting her right arm over a plush upholstered Victorian studio armchair. The photograph is presented on its original thin card stock mount featuring period-correct rounded corners and a completely plain card face without printed border rules. The reverse features a spectacular, beautifully preserved illustrative green ink backstamp for G. W. Weiser, operating at the corner of 4th and Market Streets in Steubenville, Ohio. This highly collectible backprint showcases an artistic scene of a flying winged cherub holding a nineteenth-century photographic bottle, complete with a flowing banner displaying the studio name and location. This prominent early Ohio studio mark, paired with the subject's textbook post-war garments and the remarkable logo graphics, provides an outstanding centerpiece specimen for advanced collectors of early photography ephemera.About Cartes de Visite (CDVs):
Popularized in the late 1850s and remaining popular through the 1870s, the carte de visite was a small, albumen print photograph mounted on a sturdy card stock backing. They were widely traded among friends and family, collected in Victorian photo albums, and represent the first true mass-production boom in photographic history. This original, period-correct artifact makes an excellent addition to any collection focusing on early American photography, New England genealogy, or 19th-century fashion history.
