Winner, SDWhen the writer tells their friend they hope they are \"lucky enough to get a number,\" they are referring to the Rosebud Reservation Land Lottery drawings. In October 1911, thousands of homestead seekers flooded into South Dakota town hubs like Gregory and the newly formed town of Winner. They registered for a lottery system where names were drawn out of giant metal drums. Drawing a low \"number\" gave a settler the coveted right to choose and file a 160-acre homestead claim the following spring. The front photo showing an \"Indian War Dance\" in nearby Gregory, SD was likely sold as a souvenir to the massive crowds of land-seekers arriving by train for the drawingPostcard is to A.N.
