The album itself is a beautiful example of 19th-century Swiss/Black Forest carved woodwork and makes an impressive object even apart from the photographs. Inside is an unusually extensive collection of mounted albumen prints documenting a European journey. Many of the outdoor photographs are large-format images occupying most of a page, giving the album considerable visual impact. Together they form a fascinating surviving record of 19th-century European travel and photography.
The photographs include numerous views of Switzerland and the Alps, with dramatic glaciers, mountain passes, villages, lakes and waterfalls, as well as important European cities and landmarks.
