An extraordinary 1925 photographic time capsule featuring three period studio portraits of Margaret at eight years old, preserved together in what appears to be their original frame.
Margaret’s beautifully waved bobbed hairstyle and tiered, drop-waist dress capture the unmistakable style of a Roaring Twenties childhood. The grouping includes profile, full-length, and seated portraits, creating a wonderfully complete character study rather than a single anonymous photograph.
The black-and-white portraits are printed on period photographic paper and arranged directly on a tan paper background beneath glass. There is no mat board or cut mat surrounding the photographs. The portraits have remained aligned for approximately a century, suggesting that they may be secured to the background paper; however, the attachment method cannot be verified without disturbing the sealed original backing. The photographs are likely gelatin-silver prints, although the exact photographic process has not been independently confirmed.
The gold-bronze-tone wooden frame features a repeating raised ripple or wave pattern around its outer molding, a decorative treatment well suited to the Art Deco era.
The reverse retains its aged paper backing, hanging wire, handwritten identification, and a retailer label reading “F. G. Diefendorf & Son, Books and Stationery, Fort Plain, N.Y.” The handwritten notation identifies the child as Margaret, age eight, and dates the portraits to 1925. The paper backing has not been opened, preserving the original presentation.
