Scarce late-19th-century Dr. S. A. Richmond Samaritan Nervine patent medicine bottle from St. Joseph, Missouri. This impressive clear glass bottle features a large embossed portrait of the bearded Dr. Samuel A. Richmond with “S. A. RICHMOND M.D.” surrounding his likeness. Historical records document Richmond’s introduction of a new 8-ounce Samaritan Nervine bottle featuring his portrait in 1884, making this a wonderful piece of early American patent medicine and pharmaceutical advertising history. Samaritan Nervine was marketed for epilepsy, fits and numerous nervous disorders and became one of Richmond’s best-known proprietary medicines. Clear rectangular bottle with recessed portrait panel, rounded shoulders and tall neck. Shows expected surface wear/haze consistent with age.
